How to Apply

The SB3 Program is offered jointly by Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Due to the limited number of supported SB3 openings available each year, the Admissions Committee may put you on a waiting list. In this case, you are encouraged to identify the faculty members whose research most interests you, and apply directly to the graduate programs of the participating universities to which they belong.

New Students

Online application for graduate study is now available and strongly encouraged - please click here to access Syracuse University's Graduate School website.

You may invite those people writing your letters of reference to use the online fill-in document as well, which includes a fill-in letter of recommendation portion. The document must, however, be printed when completed and submitted by mail to the SB3 Program with the original signature of the respondent.

All applications should reach the SB3 Program Office by March 1 for admission the following fall semester. However, outstanding candidates are frequently accepted before the March 1 deadline, so early application is encouraged.

Transfer Students

Students in a graduate program at one of the three participating universities may apply to transfer into the SB3 Program. Transfer requests should be initiated after a student's second semester in residence and before ending the third.

Admissions Requirements for All Applicants

  • Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry, physics or related science.
  • Completion of the General GRE test (verbal, analytical and quantitative).
  • The Subject GRE test in one of the physical or life sciences is recommended.
  • International Students only: completion of the TOEFL test.

Financial Support

All SB3 Program students receive a full tuition waiver and a competitive 12-month stipend. The stipend for 2004-2005 is $19,200, with annual increases expected.

Deadline

Early application is strongly encouraged.
Applications for new students should reach the SB3 Program office by March 1 each year to be considered for Fall Semester admission.
